It could be the savior of the wildly popular low-profile key switch.

On October 21, 2025, keycap designer Matto3o (Italia) on his blog, We are pleased to announce the release of our new keycap profile for low-profile mechanical key switches, the PFF profile.

Given that he has been releasing innovative keycap styles with a focus on spherical design, including the MT3/MTNU profile and more recently the PBS profile, there are probably no keycap fans who do not know his name.

This article will address the PFF profile.

What is PFF – Penguin Flat Feet Profile Keycaps?

Keyboard designer Matteo Spinelli (matt3o) has introduced a new keycap profile, PFF (Penguin Flat Feet ), designed from the ground up specifically for low-profile switches while continuing the design philosophy of the popular PBS (Penguin Belly Slide) profile that preceded it. PFF (Penguin Flat Feet) was designed from the ground up specifically for low-profile switches.

The top surface shape is similar to the PBS profile, with a spherical design that depresses in the center and does not vary in slope from row to row, allowing for comfortable use in any position.

In general, low-profile keyboards, priority is given to “just making it thin,” and little thought is given to the ergonomic feel of the keys.

PFF breaks from the norm and aims to achieve both thinness and comfort.

Indeed, as Matto3o says, many of the keycaps on thin keyboards are surprisingly flat.
That is beautiful when viewed as a design, but for practicality, I personally think it is better to have a slope toward the center of the keys.

Covers approximately 90% of low-profile key switches on the market

Thanks to Cherry’s earlier release, normal profile mechanical key switches are almost standardized, and various keycaps are designed based on them, so it is unlikely that the keycap skirt will hit the key switch plate when typing.

However, there is truly “chaos” when it comes to low-profile mechanical key switches, with each company releasing its own standard key switches in an attempt to gain supremacy, and keycap compatibility issues are significant.

KeyTok’s Berry profile keycaps and the PBS profile developed by Matto3o have been reported to have cases of interference with the switch plate when used with Kailh choc v2 standard low-profile key switches.

The PFF Profal keycap was designed to “not interfere” with almost all of these keyswitches.

PFF profile keycaps are considered to be available for the following four types of key switches

However, the Gateron LP mentioned in his blog is probably limited to 2.0, and you would need to interview him regarding compatibility with Gateron LP 3.0.

Manufactured by Keyreative

PFF profile keycaps are manufactured by Keyreative.

The first prototype has been completed, and come to think of it, the “thing” Zhao was showing at TKX may have been a PFF profile.

I should have asked Zhao-san (Mr. Zhao) on the day.

The final board is expected to be completed by November 15, with the first set to be released in 2026.

The price will be less expensive than PBS, and the material will be PBT and the printing will be sublimation printing.

There are currently no plans for a double shot.

There is also a statement from Matto3o that there is a lot of interest from Japan, and they are considering JIS kits.

4.5u Convex is also available for the Japanese market

Personally, this is the most exciting part.

The PFF profile covers a variety of convex keys, and the lineup includes the “4.5u” size, which is only used in the Japanese market.

English Summary

The “PFF” (Penguin Flat Feet) profile is a new low-profile keycap profile announced by Italian designer Matteo Spinelli ( matt3o). It takes the sculpt and spherical dish concept of his PBS profile but is redesigned from the ground up specifically for low-profile mechanical switches. The goal is not just to be thin, but to improve typing comfort and ergonomics – something most low-profile caps ignore. PFF is engineered to avoid housing interference across an estimated ~90% of the low-profile switch market, and is said to work with Cherry Low Profile, Kailh Choc V2 and related Kailh low-pro stems, Gateron Low Profile (likely 2.0), and Huano low-profile switches. Kailh Choc V2 and related Kailh low-pro stems, Gateron Low Profile (likely 2.0), and Huano low-profile switches. Keyreative is handling manufacturing, with prototypes already done. The first sets are targeted for 2026 release, using PBT with dye-sublimated legends at a lower price point than PBS. A Japan-focused JIS kit is being considered, including support for uncommon convex keys like 4.5u.
