This model is wired-only, so it requires no batteries and has a simple configuration with no connection delays.

In addition, all models in the Professional Series will adopt the “Type-S” key structure, and some of the existing models (Classic/HYBRID) with Japanese layout and no imprinting will be discontinued while supplies last.

However, the company plans to continue to sell the Professional Classic English layout/white (PD-KB401W) as the successor to the original model.

Features of HHKB Professional Classic Type-S

  1. High typing speed + quietness
“Type-S” structure is an evolution of the capacitance non-contact method, with a balance of 45 g press/ stroke of 3.8 mm with less blurring during keystrokes. By introducing cushioning material inside the keys, keystroke noise has been reduced by approximately 30% compared to conventional models.
  2. Minimalist design
The main unit is a wired version of the “Classic” model, pursuing simplicity without the need for batteries. Three colors are available: black, white, and snow, and both English- and Japanese-language layouts are supported (six models in total).
  3. Keymap change tool support
Supports keymap change tool that allows customization of key layout and control keys to enhance user-friendliness.

Since its launch in December 1996, the HHKB series has been a long-selling product that has shipped more than 750,000 units worldwide, mainly to programmers and engineers, based on the “minimalize philosophy.

In recent years, with the spread of telework and remote work, notebook PCs with external keyboards have become commonplace.

The company says that this model was introduced in response to the need for a quiet input environment for online meetings and third places such as cafes.

PFU is the future, PFU has announced that enhancements to the keymap modification tool (support for multiple simultaneous key presses, sleep time settings, etc.) are scheduled to be implemented in March 2026. PFU has announced that the keymap modification tool will be enhanced in March 2026.

Kawamura top RKawamura

It was the HHKB that got me hooked on keyboards.
I have both the quiet and regular models, but I still find the typing noise of the regular model quite bothersome for office use.
In that sense, it is a “legitimate evolution.

The price difference with the wireless connection model is approximately 5,000 yen.

If you have no need for wireless connectivity and want a clean look without a battery box, the new Classic Type-S is a highly recommended model.

However, if you are fine with the classic look, do not need a serious change in keymap, and prefer to “hear” the typing sound well, the first generation is fine.
