The new “Ash” color is a genuine keytop that balances visibility with a calm look

The newly added “Ash” was planned as a color that complements the HHKB Studio’s existing color, “Charcoal.”
PFU describes Ash as “a color that evokes the image of ash left behind after heat—stripping away the unnecessary and leaving only the essence.”
In terms of tone, it doesn’t shout for attention; it’s best seen as a custom part that keeps HHKB’s minimalist aesthetic while adding a calm impression to your hands.
And while it’s a subdued tone, attention has also been paid to contrast with the legends.
Dye-sublimation printing is used for the legends.
In particular, the legends on the gray keycaps are much clearer than on the Charcoal model.
It seems like a keytop set you can recommend to anyone who wants to keep the Charcoal look while making the legends easier to read.
KawamuraYou often hear that the Charcoal keytops can look blank depending on the angle, so this seems like a good option for replacements.
US layout, Japanese layout, and blank options available

The lineup includes four types: US layout, Japanese layout, US layout (blank), and Japanese layout (blank).
Since the HHKB Studio is also available in a Japanese layout model, this means genuine keytop options are now available for Japanese-layout users as well.
Especially for users of the Japanese-layout HHKB Studio, it’s great news that there are now more ways to change the look with genuine keytops.
Blank models are also available, making them a good fit for users who want an even more strongly HHKB-like minimalist look.
Limited-time special bundle with the keyboard also available
To coincide with this release, a special bundle combining the HHKB Studio unit with the “Keytop Set (Ash)” is also being sold.
The sales period is from June 23 to September 30, 2026.
| Set Contents | Regular total price (tax incl.) | Special bundle price (tax incl.) |
| HHKB Studio US layout + Keytop Set (Ash) US layout | ¥50,600 | ¥45,600 |
| HHKB Studio US layout + Keytop Set (Ash) US layout / blank | ¥50,600 | ¥45,600 |
| HHKB Studio Japanese layout + Keytop Set (Ash) Japanese layout | ¥51,590 | ¥46,590 |
| HHKB Studio Japanese layout + Keytop Set (Ash) Japanese layout / blank | ¥51,590 | ¥46,590 |
Both are priced ¥5,000 cheaper than the regular total price.
If you’re considering buying an HHKB Studio, this special bundle will likely be an easier way to get started than buying the keytop set separately later.
Replacement keytop options you can use with the HHKB Studio
With the addition of “Ash,” replacement keytops for the HHKB Studio are now even easier to choose.
Unlike the conventional HHKB Professional series, the HHKB Studio uses mechanical switches.
That means there’s room for customization by swapping keycaps.
On the other hand, because the HHKB Studio includes a pointing stick, the area around the G / H / B keys has a special shape.
Also, since the spacebar length and stabilizer positions differ from general-purpose sets, it’s known to be difficult to fully replace everything using a typical Cherry MX-compatible keycap set as-is.
For details, we also explain it on this page.

In that sense as well, having replacement keytops made for the HHKB Studio is important.
PFU genuine keytop sets
On PFU Direct, replacement keytop sets for the HHKB Studio are available in Charcoal, Snow, and Ash.
| Color | English-language array | Japanese-style array | Variations |
| sumi | 6,600 yen | 7,590 yen | Legended / blank |
| snow | 6,600 yen | 7,590 yen | Legended / blank / black legends |
| Ash | 6,600 yen | 7,590 yen | Legended / blank |
The US layout includes a complete 60-key replacement set, and the Japanese layout includes a complete 69-key replacement set. Both come with a keytop puller and an instruction manual.
Note that these keytop sets are for the HHKB Studio only.
They are not compatible with the HHKB Professional series, so be careful when purchasing.
Wood and aluminum accent keytops also available

PFU Direct also carries wood keytop sets and aluminum keytop sets compatible with the HHKB Studio.
These are not full sets that replace every key; they’re accent keytops that replace major keys such as Esc, Control, Tab, Enter / Return, Shift, and the spacebar.
| type | array (programming, programing) | Details | Price (tax included) |
| Wood keytop set | English-language array | 5 keys | ¥39,600–¥59,400 |
| Wood keytop set | Japanese-style array | 6 keys | ¥39,600–¥59,400 |
| Aluminum keytop set | English-language array | 5 keys | ¥39,600 |
| Aluminum keytop set | Japanese-style array | 6 keys | ¥39,600 |
The wood models come in materials such as ebony, black cherry, walnut, oak, and maple.
The aluminum models come in colors such as red, silver, and brown.
However, these are HHKB Studio-compatible accessories sold on PFU Direct and are made by “Matsuba Seisakusho.”
They’re different in nature from PFU’s genuine resin full replacement keytop sets, so keep that in mind.
Be aware that these are strictly “accent keycaps.”
A third-party option also exists: Keyreative’s HHKB Studio Kit

While it’s not a genuine product, there is also the “HHKB Studio Kit,” a third-party keycap option for the HHKB Studio developed through a collaboration between Keyreative and GreenEchoes Studio.
The HHKB Studio Kit is an add-on kit designed to support the HHKB Studio’s unique keys, such as the special-shaped/special-size G / H / B keys and the spacebar.
However, the HHKB Studio Kit alone cannot replace all keys. To use it, you need to combine it with Keyreative’s Base Kit.
At the moment, the domestic sales channel is DIGIART.
You can purchase the keycap set shown in the image above.

Looking at it this way, HHKB Studio keycap replacement can be broadly divided into three categories.
| type | Positioning |
| PFU genuine keytop sets | Full replacement keytops in Charcoal / Snow / Ash |
| Matsuba Seisakusho keytops | Wood and aluminum accent keytops |
| Keyreative HHKB Studio Kit | A dedicated kit to make third-party keycaps compatible with the HHKB Studio |
This addition of “Ash” is best seen as news that expands the easiest-to-use option among these: “genuine full replacement keytops.”
Things to note before buying
The most important thing to watch out for before buying is compatibility.
The “HHKB Studio Keytop Set (Ash)” is for the HHKB Studio only and is not compatible with the HHKB Professional series.
Also, the wood and aluminum keytops sold on PFU Direct are accent keytops that replace major keys.
Since they’re not full sets, if you want to replace all keys you’ll need to consider PFU’s genuine Charcoal/Snow/Ash keytop sets, or a compatible third-party keycap set.
As for Keyreative’s HHKB Studio Kit as well, it cannot replace all keys on its own. It needs to be combined with the Base Kit.
In addition, since the HHKB Studio uses “MX-compatible” key switches rather than the “Topre stem” used in models like the Professional, general MX-compatible keycaps can be used.
On the other hand, as explained on the HHKB Studio Keycaps page, some keytops (G/H/B and the spacebar size) have special shapes, so it’s not fully compatible.
At present, the compatible options are three types: the official keycap sets, accent keycaps, and the HHKB Studio Keycaps jointly developed by GreenEchoes Studio and Keyreative.
Please be careful when purchasing.
