On October 17, 2026, foostan posted a prototype of the latest version of corne, his column-staggered split keyboard, on X.

The previous v4 connected the two halves with a TRS cable, but the image shows them connected via a USB Type-C cable.

Compared with v3, corne v4 has a changed key pitch (19.05 mm) and a PCB-mounted microcontroller, which made it easier to assemble.
Another notable feature is the addition of two key switches/rotary encoders in the central area of the two halves.
The return of the “mini” version, with five columns per hand, was also a big deal.
The main change in v5 appears to be the connection method between the two halves.
With a TRS connection between the halves, hot-unplugging can potentially damage the microcontroller, whereas Type-C may prevent this, as Pekaso’s post shows.

corne has many users around the world.
It’ll be exciting to see what the specifications will be.
