The long-awaited Japanese layout provides a typing experience without switching costs.

After all, the most attractive feature of the Rainy75 Pro JIS is that it is a Japanese-language model.
The “Rainy75,” which became a big hit starting with Makuake, was an English sequence (ANSI).
Many people may have been attracted by its good looks, cosy appearance, and “rain-sounding typing sound,” but may have been put off by its “English layout.
KawamuraMost notebook computers and keyboards distributed in Japan have Japanese keyboards. In the Japanese market, English keyboards are still a niche product.
However, this time Rainy75 is a “genuine Japanese sequence”.
Unlike the “fake Japanese layout” that is often seen, both the “RO (\_)” button and the “HANKAKU / FUZENKAKU” button are equipped, and there are no major differences from the Japanese layout that is normally used.
Many people may have made this decision and purchased the product.
Enjoy a new typing experience with a rain-like typing sound
Even with the Japanese layout, the “rain-sounding keystroke sound” is of course still present.
Five layers of sound deadening foam and a unique gasket structure with 14 cylindrical rubber parts holding the PCB in place thoroughly eliminate unwanted impact and noise during keystrokes.
This will allow you to enjoy a “new typing experience” that is both moist and soft, yet has a core.
In addition to this gasket-mounted structure, a slit (flex-cut) switch plate, Kailh key switch, and aluminum case can only be combined to produce a “rain-like” keystroke sound.
Heavy CNC aluminum alloy housing and sophisticated color choices

As mentioned earlier, the Rainy75 Pro JIS uses an “aluminum body”.
The only color variation available in Japanese is black, but the matte texture is extremely beautiful, and combined with the glass weight on the back, it has a very heavy and luxurious look.
This is an item that you can feel the pleasure of owning just by having it.
Physical weight makes typing more stable.

The Rainy75 Pro JIS weighs a whopping 2 kg.
Because of this weight, it is unlikely to move with typing.
Although not ideal for carrying around, the sheer weight allows for solid and stable typing.
Things to consider before purchasing WOBKEY Rainy 75 Pro JIS
Things to consider before purchasing WOBKEY Rainy 75 Pro JIS
- Initial setup for customization (VIA) requires a bit of work.
- Too heavy to carry.
- Cost-effective but expensive compared to typical keyboards
- Fewer color variations
Initial setup for customization (VIA) requires a bit of work.
This is due to the specification of the keymap modification web application called “VIA” that is used, but a dedicated keymap modification file called “.json” must be prepared in order to change the keymap.
Download JSON file and firmware ▷▷▷
The Vial and ZMK Studio systems do not require such files, and I had the impression that this was somewhat inconvenient for VIA adoption.
KawamuraVIA has an installed version and a WEB version.
With the WEB version, once the .json file is loaded, there is no need to load it the next time.
VIAで.jsonファイルを読み込む方法▷▷

Go to VIA, click on the gear symbol→Switch the “Show Design tab” slider to “On” at the top.

Load the downloaded .json file from “Load” in the Design tab.

From the CONFIGURE tab, click “Authorize device” and select the USB-connected keyboard to change the keymap.
MOD-TAP(単押し長押し設定)や同時押し設定方法はこちらからご確認いただけます。
Too heavy to carry.

As reported earlier, the Rainy75 Pro JIS weighs approximately 2 kg.
It is not at all portable and would be difficult to carry and use.
Cost-effective but expensive compared to typical keyboards
From a keyboard fan’s point of view, the fact that a keyboard with these specs can be purchased for this amount of money definitely gives a sense of “astonishing cosmetics”.
KawamuraIt is truly amazing that a high-end keyboard with specifications at a level that could be called a high-end keyboard costs less than 30,000 yen.
However, this is only the “enthusiast’s feeling,” and for those who generally type on keyboards on a regular basis, it is inevitable that they will still be seen as “expensive.
Most keyboards available at electronics retailers can be purchased for less than 5,000 yen, and even “high-end” keyboards from major mass retail brands can be purchased for less than 20,000 yen.
In such a general “Japanese-language keyboard in Japan” genre, it may be a product in a price range that is a bit difficult to afford.
Fewer color variations

Compared to the color variations of the Rainy75 with ANSI layout, the Japanese-language version has fewer color variations and is available in only one color.
Black is a definite color scheme, but some may say they wanted a “white model”.
Loud keystrokes require switch change for office use
Rainy75 is a keyboard that “enjoys” the feel and sound of typing, and is by no means a quiet typing keyboard.
Therefore, it is difficult to use them in the office as they are sold.
KawamuraIt feels super nice to type, but the volume is so loud that if you do this at your desk at work, you are likely to antagonize those around you.
If you want to use them in your office, replace them with quiet switches.

WOBKEY Rainy 75 Pro JIS Review
Let’s take a look at the actual product.
It has a familiar pop exterior.

This molded logo is quite intriguing.

A specs sticker is securely attached to the side of the box.

Contents include the following
- Rainy75 Pro JIS main unit
- manual
- simplified manual
- Replacement keycap (control1.25u/Cmd1.25u/Opt1.0u)
- Spare key switches (3)
- Key Cap/Key Switch Puller
- 2.4GHz dongle
- USB cable (C to A)

Let’s take a look at the exterior.
It has a black machined aluminum case with black and gold printing on the alpha keys and gray and white printing on the mod keys.

There is the “half/full-width” key, which is indispensable for Windows users.

The horizontal shift of row Z is the same as for normal Japanese alignment.

The F rows are not jammed together, as is often the case with 75% layout keyboards, but are firmly independent of each other.

The devil’s gate for the 75% Japanese sequence is the lower right corner.
In order to co-locate the arrow key, right shift, and “ro”, it is inevitable that the right shift key is 1u size.

KawamuraI personally like the lack of key placement to the right of the arrow key.
Touch typing reduces mistouches.

The space bar size is 3.75u, which is slightly less compatible with commercially available Japanese keycaps, but WoB keycaps will be able to support replacement except for the space bar.
Mac users may be able to replace the keycaps with the following arrangement.
KawamuraThe mixing of control and Ctrl and the upper left-aligning and lower left-aligning of the legend are due to keycap reasons.

The red of the keyswitch plate is faintly visible from different angles.

Let’s look at the sides as well.
The side looks as if it is divided into two sections: the base section and the keycap section.

It has a two-layered structure with a top frame and bottom case. The case itself is screwed in place, but the board is gasket-mounted.

It is a gasket-mounted structure, not a top-mounted structure.

There is only a USB port on the back and no slide switch.

It should be noted that the CapsLock key must be removed to turn the wireless switch on and off.

The typing angle is fixed at 6 degrees and there is no tilt leg.

The back is simply fitted with bar-type rubber feet and stainless steel weights.

KawamuraI have the Lite version of ANSI, but that one is glass weighted.
After all, the stainless steel weight of the Pro version is very heavy.

The switch plate material is FR4 and is flex-cut.

The ANSI Lite version was made of PC material, but again, FR4’s flex-cut gives a strange “core but soft” feel to the keystroke.
The keyswitch uses Kailh Cocoa 45gf linear switches.

Let’s look at keycaps.
Homing key is bar type.

The key profile is Cherry, with different slopes for different rows.

The keytops are arched.

This is a type of keycap with hiragana legend.
The material is made of PBT, and a low, rumbling bass sound can be expected.

To my surprise, this is a double shot.

The Japanese layout differs from the English layout in that the printing of symbols, etc. differs significantly.
Therefore, it seems possible that the mold was created from a die for the Rainy75 Pro JIS.
KawamuraPerhaps it is possible that the hiragana legend part is sublimation printing.

summary

This is our review of the Rainy75 Pro JIS, which is now available in the long-awaited Japanese-language layout lineup.
The fact that only one coloring can be selected may be a bit of a turn-off for some tastes, but those who are into this keyboard are sure to love it.
