The Gravity36 DIY Keyboard Kit is a customizable, compact 36-key mechanical keyboard kit.

It is programmable, allowing you to choose and assemble the parts to your liking.

It is ideal for those who like small and cute gadgets and those who want to customize their keyboards freely.

Some parts require soldering for assembly.

However, for those who have difficulty soldering, we offer a “soldering option (1,500 yen (tax included)).

Please apply for the set by purchasing it together with the product purchase so that it can be assembled without soldering.

The only tool required for assembly is basically a Phillips-head precision screwdriver.

The following should be prepared as needed

Tools that are useful to have

• Electric precision screwdriver (used for assembly)
• Acrylic sheet anti-static spray
• Precision tweezers (used to attach rubber feet)

Additionally, if the soldering option is not used, a complete soldering iron set (including solder) and basic soldering skills are required.

The parts that require soldering are the ProMicro and the constructions.

The Gravity36 DIY Keyboard Kit is compatible with MX compatible mechanical switches (Cherry MX, Gateron, Kailh, etc.).

It is possible to select and install the switch of your choice.

All basic parts are included in the kit, but the key switch and USB cable to connect to a computer must be provided separately.

This kit is a self-made keyboard kit, and there is a large possibility of malfunction due to the buyer’s negligence during assembly.

Therefore, while minimal support will be provided by the Forum and others, we basically recommend that you are able to assemble your own system.

There is no warranty against damage.

For parts, etc., please prepare equivalent items by yourself.

This product is a “pre-order (pre-order product)” and it takes time from the completion of payment to shipping.

Consul refers to the pluggable pin headers provided by MAC8.

Normally, we sell these in 20-pin or 40-pin configuration, but this site has special order from MAC8 through a distributor, and they have specially manufactured 12-pin.

Please note that the number of times to insert and remove the device is generally defined as about 50 times, and that the device may stop functioning if it is inserted or removed more than that.

Soldering difficulty is “low”.

Through-holes to be soldered are in close proximity, but solder flows only to the warmed area, making soldering relatively easy.

Yes, it can be used without soldering.

Normally, to have a reliable electrical contact, it would be necessary to solder the conduit to the ProMicro, but fortunately, the pins fit through the through holes in the ProMicro, creating an electrical contact.

However, we cannot guarantee when the electrical contact will be lost, It is strongly recommended to solder the Consul and ProMicro together for use.

Use the ○ position as a guide and insert the image as shown.

Insert the one with the circle closer to the ProMicro side so that the circles are visible in the same direction.

Check carefully before soldering.

Recovery after soldering is difficult, so if you make a mistake and the part does not work, you should purchase a new part.

Keyboard Acrylic Plate｜Yuusha Kobo

The acrylic plate included in the package is made of “cast material”. Due to the nature of cast material, the thickness varies from lot to lot. Acrylic plates manufactured by Yousha Kobo are often made of “extruded material”, so the thickness variation is small.

We are very sorry, but this is a specification.

This specification is made because the processing cost would be added if a cutout is added to the acrylic to prevent the key switch from being pulled out.

There are two key profiles to choose from: the general Cherry and the KAM profile used in the original kit.

Especially for small keyboards, it is very meaningful to use highly visible original keycaps because different users have different characters and symbols set on the back layer.

Access Remap using your browser (Chrome recommended) with Gravity36 connected via USB.

To allow HID devices to connect, select Gravity36 and click “Connect”.

For each key, drag and drop to the area where you want to change the key at the bottom, or edit the key directly.

When finished, press the “Flash” button in the upper right corner to complete the writing.

MOD-TAP is a mechanism that changes the behavior of keys according to the time it is pressed.

One key can have two functions: a long press will function as Shift, a single press will type “.”, and so on.

Basic Keycode｜QMK Firmware

The factory default keymap is set according to the Japanese layout for Windows.

This is just an arrangement for efficient typing of Japanese that Kawamura, a web writer, has thought about and arrived at, so please change it according to your preference.

About Gravity36 keymap ▷▷▷

The default keymap for Windows Japanese layout on the Gravity36 does not include a “half/full-width” key.

Instead, you can use “Ctrl+Space” to control the IME on/off.

To enable “Ctrl+Space” IME on/off, please follow the instructions below.

(OS is assumed to be Windows 11)

procedure

1. Click the Windows button → Settings (gear symbol)
2. Type “IME” in the search window and select “Japanese IME settings
3. Select “Customize Key and Touch
4. Change “Assign preferred function to each key” from “Off” to “On
5. Set “Ctrl+Space” to “IME-On/Off

Hmmm, you’ll just have to get used to it lol.

First, before learning the keymap, it is difficult to type on a split keyboard without learning touch typing starting from the home position with the default 65% layout.

This is the main sequence of Gravity36.

It is better to start with the basics.

On top of that, if you can’t remember the keymap…

In my case, I was typing normally, and each time I typed a character I couldn’t type (symbols placed on the back layer), I looked at the cheat sheet I had printed.

With trial and error and repetition, you can learn surprisingly quickly.

When learning numbers, it is quite easy to remember them with a set of fingers.

• Left pinky 1
• Left hand ring finger – 2
• Left hand middle finger – 3
• Left index finger – 4/5
• Right index finger – 6/7
• Right hand middle finger – 8
• Right hand ring finger – 9
• Right hand pinky – 0

TRRS cables are audio cables with φ3.5mm terminals with 4-pole attributes.

TRRS stands for Tip Ring Ring Sleeve, with Tip at the tip, Ring1/2 in the middle, and Sleeve at the end, indicating that each has its own polarity.

Normal stereo plugs are 3-pole (TRS) and monaural plugs are 2-pole.

Since Gravity36 works with “TRRS”, please refrain from using other cables.

The number one contraindication for split keyboards is “unplugging the TRRS cable while the USB cable is connected”.

Never pull it out because it will short-circuit.

Connecting the device in a half-plugged state can also cause malfunctions.

When unplugging the TRRS cable, take the following steps: 1) Unplug the USB cable to cut off the current 2) Unplug the TRRS cable.

If removed while energized, the MCU will malfunction.

I-shape (straight shape) is recommended.

It is difficult to pull out and insert in L-shape.

I recommend Jizai Style’ s cables.

Kawamura

Jizai Style’s cable is slightly thicker at the slope.
I want to use this cable so much that I have selected a spacer that this cable sticks in.

There is no particular specification for USB cables.

Both Type-C to Type-C and Type-C to Type-A are confirmed to work.

In the unlikely event that input is not possible, try connecting with a Type-C to Type-A cable.

Note, however, that the keyboard side of the USB cable must be “I-shaped (straight)” or else it will not stick.

It can accommodate up to about 9mm in diameter. (because the height of the spacer employed is 10 mm)

Breakdown.

Never connect both USB cables at the same time, as there is a high possibility that current will flow from both cables and short-circuit inside the keyboard.

Can be used independently.

However, for this type of use, it is preferable to use it as a macro pad.

If you want to use it as a macro pad, you should create a keymap specifically for the macro pad.

Presets are available and can be easily changed by following the steps below.

Select “Save/Restore a keymap” from the right side of Remap’s keymap change screen.

Select the keymap profile you wish to set

Press the “flash” button to reflect keymap changes.

As for the included glass acrylic plates, all products have a button for pressing the reset switch, but as for the optional acrylic plates of different colors, only some of the initial lot products do not have a hole.

We have determined that there is no problem in using these products, and only the initial batch of products has “no holes” in the specifications.

Since conductivity testing of the circuit board is performed on all products at the time of shipment, unless the board is damaged during transportation, it is most likely due to user factors.

First, check the following, and then try to see if the relevant key responds in Remap’s test matrix mode.

• Is the keyswitch firmly engaged? ｜When the key switch is inserted, one of the terminal legs may be bent and the key switch may not energize. Pull out the key switch and check the terminal. If the terminal is bent, straighten it with tweezers or radio pliers and reinsert it.
• Are there any defects in the key switches themselves? ｜There is a possibility that a certain percentage of the keyswitches are “defective” and do not respond. If the keyswitch is fitted to another part of the keypad and it responds, the keyswitch itself may be defective in the initial stage. Please replace it with an available key switch.
• Is the ProMicro disconnected? | The microcontroller that connects the PC to the keyboard is attached by a pluggable part called a conSlu. If this contact is lost, certain keys or ranges will not respond. Make sure all terminals are engaged in the holes.
• Is the USB cable plugged in?｜No signal will be input to the PC unless the USB cable is plugged in.
• Is the TRRS cable plugged in?｜If the TRRS cable connecting the left and right side is not plugged in, all keys on the one without USB connection will not respond.
• Is the TRRS cable disconnected? ｜The TRRS cable that connects the left and right side of the keypad can break internally if strong force is applied to it. If the cable is disconnected, all keys on the side not connected via USB will not respond.
• Is the socket floating? ｜In some cases, the socket soldered to the board may come off when the keyswitch is forcibly fitted into the socket. In such cases, the socket loses contact with the board and cannot be input. If the socket is simply disconnected from the board, it can be fixed by soldering, but if the entire copper foil of the board circuit is disconnected, it may be difficult to repair.
• Are you using a firmware other than the default firmware? |The firmware that is written to the ProMicro when it is shipped is the firmware that can be used with either the left or right hand ProMicro produced by takashicompany. If not, and you are using the default firmware, only the left side ProMicro is normally available, and the area circled by the red square will not respond when the right hand side one is connected.

Acrylic plates are prone to dust adhesion due to their characteristics.

Applying an anti-static spray ( such asPolycare orHishikote A ) before assembly will prevent adhesion to some extent.

Acrylic plates are very vulnerable to scratches, which can occur during the manufacturing process and when removing the protective sheet.

Although we remove all detached or scratched sheets upon inspection, it is still difficult to avoid microscopic scratches.

Please understand that we are not responsible for any loss or damage to your property.

A soft cloth dampened in hot water of about 60°C (140°F) may be applied to the area in question to float the glue and then wiped off.

It can be removed well with eyeglass wipes, Kyon chamois, or microfiber cloths.

We do not recommend tissues, etc., as the fibers adhere to them due to static electricity.

Similarly, kimwipes are prone to fiber adhesion.

There is a method of applying a liquid glass coating agent.

Normal acrylic scratches at a hardness of about 2H, but this method increases the strength to about 9H.

Gravity36 does not use any sound-absorbing materials to emphasize its looks.

Therefore, some keyswitches may be noisy when keystrokes are struck.

We suggest the following measures

• Use quiet switches｜The recommended solution is to use quiet keyswitches. Most of the recent silent switches are pre-lubricated and almost noiseless. Although there are personal differences in weight preference, Kailh DeepSea Silent Islet is suitable for everyone.
• Stretching the key switch pad behind the switch plate｜Applying a silent key switch pad to the back of an acrylic key switch plate is one method. However, the transparency of the acrylic may be lost.

About the bottom plate

It would be possible to produce a simple glass plate without a cutout.

The problem is that the acrylic plate used for Gravity36 is about 2-3 mm thick, so it is probably impossible to reproduce at this point.

The reason is that Diamante high transparency glass is more than 3 mm thick.

About the switch plate

It is best to assume that the hole for the square key cannot be reproduced.

Even if it were possible to drill each hole by waterjet machining, it would be very expensive and impractical from a cost standpoint (several Gravity 36s could be purchased).

■ Throughout

As for the threaded holes, mirror finishing cannot be applied to the periphery of the drilled area, resulting in a whitish matte finish and an unattractive appearance (mirror finishing can be applied only to the periphery of the base plate).

There is also a high possibility of variations in processing accuracy.

Acrylic can be scratched by simply wiping, and it is also charged with static electricity, but from a manufacturing cost perspective, it would be safer to proceed with the current acrylic specifications, which are easier to process.

Although this is a rare case, if you are using Windows and your keyboard is recognized as an English keyboard, some of the functions of the Japanese IME may not work.

In fact, I was able to reproduce it in my environment.

However, this situation is limited and is reproduced when using system applications such as folder renaming.

In that case, you can switch without problems by pressing “Alt+`(tilde)”.

Alternatively, use the mouse to control the IME, or select another window and press Control + Space to return.

This is not due to the keyboard, but to the OS behavior.

Since it is unlikely that the board itself has failed, we assume that the problem is probably related to the microcontroller.

Please confirm the following points

• Possible solder defects in the microcontroller｜Is the solder between the pins of the microcontroller sticking together? If they are stuck together, a short circuit will occur and you will not be able to input correctly.
• Is the conduit firmly inserted into the board? If the pin is bent, it cannot be energized properly and input cannot be made.

Possible problems include

• Defective microcontroller on the right hand side｜ Poor soldering (e.g., through holes in close proximity are soldered to each other)
• Poor contact of constructions｜Constructions are not firmly stuck to the board, or pins are bent.
• Bent key switch pins｜Key switch inserted in the wrong direction or electrodes not firmly seated in the socket or bent.
• Poor connection of TRRS cable｜TRRS cable is not firmly inserted to the depth.
• Defective TRRS cable itself｜Content of TRRS cable is disconnected.
• TRS cable instead of TRRS cable｜Cables with only TRS (3-pole) cannot be connected. The microcomputer part will get hot and there is a risk of burns or fire. Please be very careful as you are responsible for any disaster caused by misuse.

TRRS cables that have been tested for operation

• Jizai Style’s DENSE Series*.
• UGREEN 3.5mm audio cable 4-pole

*In some rare cases, there is a possibility that there may be a defective connection between the left and right side due to an initial defect during manufacturing. (There is a rare case that a part of TRRS is short-circuited and becomes TRS.)

If the right hand side (or left hand side) is not entered, check the reverse side.

Looking at the back side, it is normal that the LED lights of both microcontrollers are lit.

If the connection between the left and right is not made, the LED on the microcontroller opposite the one to which USB is connected will not light up.

The TRRS cable included in the package is only a “sample”.

We have confirmed the operation of the system using a random selection that probably does not have any problem with operation, but we have not been able to check all of them.

Due to the nature of the sample, we will not be able to return or exchange the product even if it is not usable.

We would be happy to purchase commercial products.

It is a good idea to use a tester.

In the tester I use, the following settings (energization check mode) are used to check the energization.
